There was a flash challenge for still life art over at Renderosity which I completely missed taking part of, but I still wanted to create a new still life so here it is. It’s rather simple but I love it for its simplicity. I used some background props from a room setting and overhauled them with new Superfly materials (some from a presets and others of my own creation) to give them some really cool up-close realism. The lighting was tricky to create as I wanted it to be all from the candle which I could do but then it didn’t show enough details so I added a soft global IDL so everything could be seen. I’m happy with how it turned out and happy I managed to create something like this with all that’s going on in my personal life right now.
Technical Notes

While I tried to make the primary light source an emissive material from the flame, that didn’t work so well. Instead, I added a point light with a short-range right above the candle then an IDL globe around the entire scene. I originally hadn’t planned on using depth of field, but the scene looked completely flat without it, so I rendered it with depth of field using Superfly. I increased the render settings higher than usual to make up for the various special cycles materials that needed special rendering and it still didn’t take more than an hour to render full size, thankfully. After rendering in Poser 12, I took the raw render into Photoshop where I used a Photoshop action to give it a vintage antiqued look. After that, I took the image into Lightroom where I further enhanced the image and was able to minimize the noise in the image while adding a vignette effect.
