While I impatiently await the arrival of the Season 3 premiere of The Orville, whenever that will be can’t come soon enough, I created this artwork of my most recent favorite sci-fi vessel. This one took a while to create though I worked on it off and on. It took a full two days of tinkering to figure out what an alien planet’s atmosphere should look like and then how I should/could render it but, during those two days I worked on other projects as well. It was all worth it in the end though as I like my results. Now to rewatch the first two seasons again and hope they are able to resume filming (safely) SOON.
Technical Notes

Unlike my previous Orville inspired artworks, this one was rendered in Superfly with all brand-new materials on the ship for added realism. (I think the new materials make it look so much more awesome!) I made three renders of this scene: one full scene render, one render of just the ship’s blue emissive lights, and one of just the planets’ atmospheres. I used the extra latter two renders as overlay layers in Photoshop to add to the glowing effects in the final artwork. Most of the magic of this artwork was admittedly done in ON1 Effects including the starflare and color enhancement. The “quantum drive trail” was fun to do. I created an outline of the ship in cyan then used the deform tool to stretch it out past the ship by about an inch. Then I used a Photoshop motion blur effect. Finally, I set the layer’s opacity down and the layer blend mode to screen and erased the parts I didn’t need. Done!
