Puffin See Puffin Do

Fun fact! Puffins are extremely social animals. When researchers used one-legged decoys, Puffins responded by emulating the decoys’ stance.

Notes
This image, while cute, is actually based in fact. There was a project, Project Puffin, to bring Atlantic Puffins back to Maine. It had been 100 years since Puffins inhabited Eastern Egg Island. Dr. Kress used decoys of Puffins to lure them back and it worked! Also, the Puffins are such social birds that when they saw the “one-legged” fake Puffins, they imitated them by standing on one leg. It’s such a cute and remarkable story. There are now over a hundred nesting pairs on the island; Project Puffin was a success!
I created the “decoy” using only Poser primitive props and worn-looking shaders. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do it when I started but, it looks like I succeeded! I tried to make the entire image look like a wildlife photograph. Did I succeed in that? The rocks kept rendering with little squares on them. I finally figured out it was the included height maps. I replaced those with a 3D texture shader via Cycles and got what you see here. The water drips from the fish were added with a brush in postwork.
