I’ve been trying to create this idea for literal years, but I could never get it looking quite right. Even earlier today, I wasn’t sure I “had it” and considered putting this latest attempt on either the backburner or the recycle bin. However, I kept working at it and working at it and adjusting and tweaking… until I finally came up with something I kind of like. It’s colorful at least. I also used some new lighting techniques including some more about IDL and using Superfly light emitters rather than any traditional lighting at all.
Technical Notes

As I mentioned in my regular notes, I didn’t use any traditional lighting for this scene… which made it tricky to adjust things between renders. I used an old IDL lamps set from RuntimeDNA to light the scene and used different bright colors for each lamp to create the colorful setup you see in the scene. I updated the all the materials of the old guitar prop with new Superfly shaders. Postwork was fun as I didn’t know exactly what look I was going for at first, so I did a lot of experimenting. I actually lost track of what all I did for the final result.
